How to Prepare for Spring RVing in Your Airstream

It’s the best time of the year – time to take your Airstream RV out of storage and back onto the road where it belongs. But you shouldn’t take your rig straight from storage. Instead, you’ll need to go through an inspection and preparation process to set yourself up for smooth traveling this spring.

Here at Airstream of Montana, we strive to make your life easier. We know it can be hard to remember all the de-winterization steps, especially when you are aching to get back to traveling. We’ve created the following beginner’s guide covering everything you need to get your camper ready for spring. We are located in Missoula, Montana and proudly serve those in Bozeman and Kalispell.

Inspection

It’s time to apply the spring cleaning mentality to your Airstream RV. While it’s sat in storage, it’s likely accumulated dirt, dust, water spots, and other forms of grime. Give it a good wash so that it’ll be ready to glisten out on the road.

Next you’ll want to inspect your rig to make sure storage hasn’t taken any tolls on the interior or exterior. Look at the roof to make sure the seams aren’t cracking or missing sealant. Check the corner and sidewalls seams to ensure there won’t be any water leaks on your next vacation. Open up the doors, windows, cabinets, slide-outs, and awning. This will help you air out your Airstream and notice any squeaky hinges or other issues. Look throughout the various rooms to confirm that no critters made your rig their home or that any water damage has occurred. Finally, test your appliances and lights to ensure they are all in good working order.

Maintenance

Once you’ve inspected your rig, your next step is to do a range of maintenance tasks to prevent and address issues. Check the air pressure and tread levels in your tires and ensure they match the right levels according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Look for cracks and other forms of visible damage.

Next, inspect your battery. Freezing temperatures can cause cracks and if you find any, it’s time to replace your battery. If it’s free of cracks, all you’ll need to do is disconnect it, clean the connections, check the fluid levels, and charge it up again.

Finally, you’ll want to look at your fluid levels. Make sure you have enough brake, windshield, and antifreeze/coolant. If your Airstream has a generator, service the oil and the filters.

Dewinterize the Water System

Finally, you’ll want to dewinterize your Airstream’s water system. All you need to do is drain the fresh water tank, thoroughly rinse it, and fill it with clean water. Run your water pump to get that fresh water in the lines, which will also help flush out any leftover antifreeze.
