Trying to stay active and healthy can be difficult even when you have a lot of space to work with, but it can be even more difficult when you’re on the road in your RV, regardless of how long your trip is. But a fun road trip plan can quickly spiral into a miserable string of sick days if you’re not taking care of your body. Don’t forget that the stress of travel leaves you more susceptible to illness.
If you live in your RV full-time, then it’s even more important that you remain diligent with your health habits. That’s why Airstream of Montana has provided some tips for staying healthy in your RV. If you need additional help, stop by our location in Missoula, Montana. We also serve those in Bozeman and Kalispell, Montana.
Exercise
Staying fit is often part of a more adventurous itinerary, but if it’s not, you’ll still want to stay active. At the very least, you’ll want to avoid sitting for long periods of time. This means that, when you’re driving from one place to the next, you’ll want to stop every two hours and take an active fifteen-minute break. And keep in mind that, while a gentle stroll is nice, you’re going to need to power walk or jog to stay healthy. Effective exercise gets your heart rate up. This can be anything from hiking to biking, kayaking to backpacking. Even a brisk walk around the RV park can help you stay in shape.
If you’re a full-timer looking for ways to stay active during the cold and rainy months, then you might want to check and see if the RV park you’re staying at has an indoor gym or special classes. Some parks have their own pool where you can swim laps or join a water aerobics class. At the very least, you can temporarily clear out your living area and follow an online exercise routine or do your own. Just make sure you’re getting the right kind of exercise, roughly three to four times a week.
Diet
The next health concern that’s easy to throw by the wayside is your diet. Say you’ve spent a long day outdoors and it’s just easier to pick up food on your way home. Or maybe you’re trying to save space in your cupboards. Of course, occasional takeout and junk food is okay, but you don’t want to make it a habit. Try to avoid lazy habits that lead to an unhealthy diet.
One way to combat this problem is to spend some of your downtime meal planning. Figuring out what you’re going to eat and, more importantly, when you’re going to make it can make healthy eating a lot easier. If you know you’re going to be too tired to do the prep work after you come back to your RV for the day, then make everything in the morning so all that’s left is the easy part. This can also help you decide if you need to make room for extra ingredients, too. Keep in mind that if you make bigger meal portions, you’ll have leftovers to eat the next day. And, of course, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Other Health Tips
There are some other great tips you can follow to stay happy and healthy in your RV. Of course, any unhealthy substance you put in your body should be approached with caution. Try to kick cigarette smoking for better long-term health and moderate your drinking habits.
Take full advantage of bug repellents and sunscreen. If you’re going to be out in nature, make sure you’re taking the appropriate precautions to keep you safe (water filters, basic survival gear, sturdy shoes, etc.). Make smart choices behind the wheel to avoid serious accidents and keep your RV interior clean so you have a healthy environment to live in.
